Meet the Dude Who Turned the Western States From Horse Race to Foot Race

The Western States endurance race is one of the most-cherished ultra runs in the world. Famously, it began as a horse race until in 1972 a few soldiers took two days to hike and run the 100-miler. Soon after, Gordy Ainsleigh proved you could bite off the whole route in one sub-24-hour push. The rest is history.
