So my mother and father are looking at semi-retiring, downgrading their house and land, and buying a caravan and doing some travel around Australia for about half the year.
Now my mother remembers fondly as a child (so ~45 years ago), my grandfather hooking up the 24 foot Viscount behind the old XC Ford Falcon and shooting around the country.
Now the old 23 foot my grandparents had was ~2,500kg loaded, with a shower and a kitchen.
Now, those caravans were around $40,000 in the 1980’s, adjusted for inflation, that $40,000 in 1980’s Australia is equal to $122,000 today, which is about what is on-par with what caravans are worth now, but looking at the caravans in that price range, with those features, you’re around the 3,500kg or larger mark once you fill the water tanks and pack the basics.
As a result, you’re no longer hooking them up to the regular affordable family car, but instead hooking them up to something like a RAM 1500, which costs close to $90,000 brand new so you can drive it safely and stay within weights.
My mother found a Caravan she liked, with the features, the New Age Oz Classic, so really, for them it’s a $200,000 investment of a $90,000 car and a $100,000 caravan.
Not really practical to tow behind her Kia Sportage….
