Jerry can storage ideas. : overlanding

I’m planning a trip where I’ll be out for a month, driving from Southern California to Montana and back.

A few people have told me a Jerry can for gas is advisable, so I’m trying to figure out where to store the can.

I’m limited on outside space, and generally understand it to be a bad idea to keep gas inside the car.

My rooftop is taken up by a GFC Superlite, and I don’t think it’s a great idea to attach a Jerry can to the rear ladder. I don’t have a rear hitch carrier, nor do I really want to drop a thousand to buy one.

I was curious about those side load panels that hang over the cargo area side glass. Would those support 40 ish pounds?

I have a 2015 4Runner. not pictured is the ladder that’s now installed.
