Hey everyone!
I have a ’98 E350 standard cargo van with the 5.4l 2v engine, 2wd with a Dana 60 open rear diff, 3.55 gearing and 32 spline axles. I want to make it into a more capable overlander, so I’ll be swapping over to 35 spline axles to give me more diff options, and I would love to hear y’all’s opinions on/experiences with the Eaton Truetrac or the Detroit locker.
According to Eaton, both seem like they’re fine for road/highway driving, though, maybe the Truetrac is better suited (?), and they both seem like they’d perform well off-road, though, maybe the Detroit locker would have the advantage (?) since it will automatically lock and split the torque equally between the axles.
Also, I’m now running what is almost a 33″ tire (285/75-16 BFG KO2), plus wanting to tackle more off-road adventures, AND looking to occasionally tow a small travel trailer or boat in the future – should I re-gear? Go to 3.73? 4.10? Stay with the 3.55?
Any experience with either rear end, and/or gearing is very much appreciated.
