Here in Oklahoma, I can never know what to expect when it comes to winter weather. From snow days and ice storms to tank tops in December, anything is possible. Recently, we had a snow day and enjoyed a fun-filled snow day adventure outdoors.
There’s something magical about waking up to a fresh blanket of snow, especially for kids who can’t wait to bundle up and head outside. Snow days provide the perfect opportunity for kids to engage in active play, explore nature, and even get creative indoors when it’s time to warm up. Whether you’re looking for ways to keep little ones entertained or make lasting family memories, here are some of the best winter snow day activities for kids.
Proper Clothing
Proper clothing choices are essential for keeping kids warm and comfortable on snow days. I prefer insulated coveralls or bibs paired with a heavy jacket to provide full-body warmth and protection from the cold. Beanies and gloves are a must to retain heat and keep little hands and ears from getting too cold, while insulated waterproof boots help keep feet dry and warm, preventing discomfort from snow and slush.
These layers not only protect kids from the harsh winter elements but also allow for extended playtime outside, ensuring they can enjoy sledding, building snow forts, and other winter adventures without getting chilled too quickly.
Outdoor Activities
When the snow starts falling, it’s time to bundle up and head outside for a day of adventure. Building a snow fort is a creative and fun winter activity that sparks creativity and teamwork. Kids can pack snow into blocks to construct walls or even an igloo-style shelter. My kid used some small plastic tubs they found in the garage. For those looking for a bit more speed, sledding down a snowy hill offers endless fun and excitement, whether using a sled, a tube, or even a makeshift cardboard slide.
Sledding is an endless fun activity my kids could do for hours! Of course, no snow day is complete without building a snowman or getting creative with snow creatures. Kids can add sticks, scarves, and buttons or rocks to bring their frosty friends to life. My kids like to team up or create little competitions, judging each other’s work.
A winter scavenger hunt is another great way to explore the outdoors, with a checklist of fun finds like pinecones, icicles, and animal tracks in the snow. For those who love friendly competition, snowball games are a given; whether it’s a classic snowball fight, target practice with buckets, or building snowball pyramids, there’s no shortage of ways to have fun in a winter wonderland!
Indoor Activities
Unfortunately, the outdoor fun must come to an end at some point, especially on days with frigid temperatures. Extended play outside isn’t always an option. That’s where indoor activities come in handy to keep kids entertained while still embracing the winter weather. A homemade hot chocolate bar is a simple but exciting way to warm up—let kids customize their cocoa with whipped cream, marshmallows, sprinkles, or even a dash of cinnamon. Making a large batch in the crockpot on warm will provide longer use.
For creative minds, winter-themed crafts like snowflake cutting, pinecone painting, or making homemade snow globes can bring the snowy wonderland inside. Another favorite indoor activity is building a cozy blanket fort, complete with pillows and indoor lanterns or flashlights, where kids can snuggle up and read winter-themed books while sipping their hot chocolate or pretend play.
For a hands-on and nostalgic treat, try old-fashioned molasses taffy inspired by the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. I used to do this as a kid; my mom was always good at making simple old-fashioned activities a fun time. In the past, they would pour hot molasses over a sheet of fresh snow, watching it harden into chewy taffy. Today, maple syrup or honey can be used for a tastier and equally fun experience. My kids love this activity and call it “Back in the Old Days” playtime, pretending to live like pioneers as they make and enjoy their winter candy.
Finally, when everyone is ready to wind down, a winter-themed movie marathon is the perfect way to relax, grab a blanket, some popcorn, and enjoy classic snow day movies together.
Educational & STEM Activities
Snow days aren’t just for fun; they can also be a great opportunity for hands-on learning. One way to combine creativity and science is by building a bird feeder to help local birds find food during the winter months. Using household items like pinecones, peanut butter, and birdseed, kids can craft simple feeders and hang them outside, then observe which birds come to visit. This activity not only teaches kids about wildlife but also encourages responsibility and conservation.
Another great way to keep little minds engaged is by writing a snow day journal, kids can document their snowy adventures with drawings, stories, or even a fun comic strip. They can describe the sights, sounds, and experiences of their day, helping to build writing and storytelling skills while reflecting on their winter memories.
Snow days are a magical break from the everyday routine, offering endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, indoor creativity, and hands-on learning. From sledding and building snow forts to crafting, baking, and observing winter wildlife, there are countless ways to make the most of a day at home. Balancing outdoor play with warm indoor activities ensures kids stay engaged, active, and cozy all day long. Most importantly, these moments create lasting winter traditions that families can enjoy year after year. So, grab your mittens, pour some hot chocolate, and make the most of your next snowy adventure!
